History of Chattarpur Mandir

Chattarpur MandirThe Chattarpur Mandir was founded by the legendary Saint Shree Durga Charanuragi Baba Sant Nagpal Ji, a humble servant of God and an ardent worshipper of Goddess Durga. He was born in 1925 in Karnataka on an auspicious full moon day which also happened to be the day when Holi Festival was celebrated during that year. Baba Ji spent many years in Kashmir and then moved to Delhi after guidance from Goddess Durga through his dreams and prayers. In Delhi, Baba Ji stayed in Arjun Nagar where he constructed a small and beautiful Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga Maa. He then moved near Chattarpur Village in Delhi and stayed in the Durga Ashram which is now a part of the main Chattarpur Mandir Complex wing that lies about a kilometre away from the Temple.

During the mid 1970s, Baba Ji then shifted from the Ashram to the site where the Chattarpur Temple sits grandly today. During those years, this site was only a wasteland embedded with wild bushes and shrubs. Devotees would travel from across the state to visit Baba Ji and his 'Shakti Peeth' and slowly, with their help and donation, the initial construction work of the Chattarpur Mandir took place. Baba Ji would carry bricks on his shoulders and assist in the construction work of the Temple and it is unbelievable when you see the Temple today after a span of more than two decades as to how it emerged from a small worship place into a Complex and 'Shakti Peeth' that spreads over a massive land measuring 70 acres.

The temple architecture is designed clearly in South Indian style. This is the style that developed in the Dravida Desam. The Vimana and the Gopurams are the distinctive characteristics of the Southern style. The Vimana is a tall pyramidal tower consisting of several progressively smaller storeys. This stands on a square base.

The Gopuram has two storeys separated by a horizontal moulding. The Prakara or the outer wall, envelops the main shrine as well as the other smaller shrines, the tank. The Pallavas, the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Vijayanagar rulers, the Nayaks all contributed to the Southern style of temples. Extended over a wide area in serene ambience, the temple presents a classic example of modern temple architecture that embodies extensive use of marbles.

Two of her fierce but very powerful forms are Durga (goddess beyond reach) and Kali (goddess of destruction). Goddess Parvati is the appearance of Prakriti (Nature) also besides being Shakti and the mother of the universe. All the organisms have arisen out of the Nature, hence She is called as Jagadamba.
